Assistant Scribe

Job Requirements
  • Good organizational skills
  • Calmness with things are crazy

The Assistant Scribe and the Gate are two people working ringside that have to be in constant communication with each other and set the pace for how smoothly the trial is going.

Before the runs begin

The Assistant Scribe needs to get the scribe sheets from the Secretary's table and ensure that the sheets are arranged in the order the dog and handler teams are flowing through the ring.

As handlers are checking their dogs in the Assistant Scribe works with the Gate Steward and re-shuffles the sheets as conflicts are resolved, removes sheets for absentees and otherwise gets things ready. A good practice to use is when you have dogs that have not been checked in you should turn the scribe sheets sideways in the stack so that you can differentiate between checked in dogs and dogs not checked in. Also this makes it easy to find a scribe sheet should someone check their dog in after the start of the class.

First dog on the line!

Once the checkins are all done and the sheets are in order the Assistant Scribe should get the first three sheets ready and on to clip boards for the Scribe. Give the Scribe their first scribe sheet and let the Gate and Timer know that the table is ready.

Prior to this the Assistant Scribe, Timer and Scribe need to work out who is marking the times on the scribe sheets at the conclusion of the runs. Normally the Assistant Scribe should do this freeing up the Scribe to concentrate on the Judge.

Once the run is finished and the Scribe has finished putting any notations on the sheet that the Judge has requested, the Assistant Scribe takes the completed scribe sheet, hands the Scribe the sheet for the next run and if this was agreed on marks the time on the sheet. The sheet is then handed off to the Score Runner and the next (third) sheet is put on the now empty clipboard for future running.

If the Gate Steward indicates that the order has changed, the Assistant Scribe re-orders the sheets accordingly.

After the last run

Once all the runs are done, any absentee sheets get marked as absent by either the Scribe or Assistant Scribe to be handed to the Score Runner to be handed in to the Secretary's table.
